Wetzlar, Germany. Werther is in love with Charlotte, but it’s an impossible love as she is engaged to someone else. Following the wedding, Charlotte puts some distance between them and out of desperation for an impossible love, Werther commits suicide and dies in the arms of the woman he loves.
Based on the novel by Goethe, Jules Massenet loyally presents the romantic character which personifies the melancholy caused by impossible love. The set by Willy Decker has been a hit in various theatres and offers a context of romantic expressionism with contrasts of colour and impossible shapes which accompany the different moods of the play.
