The Festa Major del Raval is organised by the El Carme Residents’ Association and includes a string of activities for people of all ages and tastes: music and dance, havanera singing, children’s activities, communal meals, theatre, giants, devils, human towers, sports tournaments and a skating race which has proved increasingly popular in the last few years.
A trade fair by artisans and shopkeepers, promoted by commerce in the neighbourhood, has also been held since 1983. The festival is held in honour of the Mare de Déu del Carme, the patron of the main parish church in the neighbourhood.
Festivities get under way on 13 July with a procession and a performance by local choral societies, a dance and a parade featuring all sorts of figures: giants, big heads, the Bouets and Vaqueta from El Raval. The opening speech follows and will be given by Faouzia Chati Badou, chair of the Association of Moroccan Women in Catalonia.
