This year is the 25th anniversary of the ‘Toc d’Inici’, the opening dance for the city’s local festival, as well as the centenary of the Gegants Nous de la Casa de la Caritat, also known as the Gegants de Corpus. As ever, spectators will be able to see these giant figures dance as they come out of the City Hall and do a lap of the square before heading back to the Palau de la Virreina.
And who are the musicians with the melodies for each figure to dance to? The forty members of the Ministrils del Camí Ral, a formation which only performs once a year to get the celebrations for La Mercè under way. Fireworks launched from the rooftop of the City Hall will also signal the start of Barcelona’s local festival.
