‘Objects of Desire’

Surrealism inspired the design of everyday objects right from the start. Yet the impact this artistic movement had on design, particularly after World War II, is not well known.

The exhibition ‘Objects of Design. Surrealism and Design 1924-2020’ explores the two-way exchange between surrealism and design, juxtaposing works of surrealist art with outstanding pieces of design from the past hundred years.

Design and everyday objects were a great source of inspiration for surrealism and played a crucial role in its evolution. Less known is the decisive impact that surrealism had on design, playing a major role in liberating design from the functionalist dogma according to which “form follows function”.
